VENUS BEATS PETRA

Reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was defeated comprehensively by former world number one Venus Williams in the Sony Ericsson Open. The tournament is the first time that Venus has taken to the court since being a part of the US Open in 2011 and her win over one of the top female tennis players at the moment could be a signal of intent on the part of the American. However, in spite of all that has been said about the performance of Williams in the match, it must be said that the Czech player Kvitova did very little to enhance her reputation as she almost threw away the match, which finished in three sets.

And it was quite visible that Venus was suffering from fatigue after returning from such a long hiatus and she was lacking match fitness but incidentally, so was the left handed Petra Kvitova who admitted herself that when the match went into the tie-breaking third set, it became extremely difficult for her and she found it very hard to continue.

Kvitova also surrendered game and break points in the first two games of the last set and it was no surprise that she was punished for it by the former world number one. Kvitova said of Venus that she was looking good from the shots that she was making but admitted that she might be lacking  little bit of match practice after being out for such a long time.

But the question is, how can the reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, no matter how tired or fatigued she might be, expect others to count her as a serious threat when she didn’t even manage to defeat a tired and unfit Venus Williams? Only time will give us the answers to this questions when she takes part in the upcoming events.
