Petra Kvitova has defeated Peng Shuai of China in the second round of the Women’s tennis singles tournament of London Olympics. She won the match by 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. With this win, Kvitova has secured a place in the third round. Kvitova, who has been given sixth seed in the competition, had to work hard for this victory. She did well in the first set and won it without having much problem. But, in the second set, his performance was not up to the mark. She lost the second set and it seemed that a big upset is on the cards. But, she came back well in the third set and finished the match in style.
After the match, Kvitova said that she played bad tennis in the second set. She was not able to play her forehand well. As per Kvitova, she was under a bit of pressure before the start of the third set. But, after breaking the service of Peng Shuai in the very first game of the third set, she started to breathe easier. After the first game of the third set, Kvitova didn’t have to face much problem. The Chinese player continuously made mistakes in the third set and lost the match.
Kvitova played some pretty ordinary forehand shots in the match. After the match, Kvitova admitted that she would have to improve her game to win the upcoming matches. On being asked about Peng Shuai, Kvitova said that she is a fantastic young player and she made her work hard for each and every point in the match. But, she was not able to hold her nerves during the third set.
In the third round, Kvitova will play against the Russian superstar Maria Sharapova. Sharapova is a high quality player and Kvitova would have to play out of her skin to defeat Sharapova.
Former Wimbledon women’s champion Petra Kvitova saw her reign as the champion of the All England Club ended by a resurgent Serena Williams, but the Czech Republic player believes that Williams deserved her title on the back of some tremendous form since she made her comeback to the court.
Williams, who went on to defeat newly crowned world number one Victoria Azarenka in the semi final of Wimbledon and Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska in the final to claim her 5th title at the All England Club deserved to be crowned the champion, according to the former world number two.
Kvitova stated that the performances Williams has put up since returning to the court after spending almost 10 months off the court due to injury and health issues deserved the title simply because of the sheer desire and hunger that she displayed to return to the pinnacle of tennis. 2011 was an incredible year for Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. She conquered at Brisbane, Paris, Madrid, Wimbledon, Linz and the WTA Championships, was awarded Player of the Year, and received her highest World Ranking at Number 2. It comes as a surprise then, that 2012 has, as of yet, produced very little and as Kvitova was knocked out of Wimbledon yesterday, this year shows no signs of echoing the triumphs of 2011.
January saw her reach the semi-finals at the Australian Open, only to be deterred by Sharapova. Impaired by an Achilles injury and illness she was unable to battle at Doho and Dubai, and after a straight set defeat at Wimbledon yesterday, her quest to hold the trophy once more has come to an end.
Kvitova’s Wimbledon tournament started comfortably, beating Baltacha and Lepchenko in straight sets to take her into the fourth round. She was met by Schiavone, who for the first set at least was able to dominate, rinsing Kvitova of her confidence and game play; Schiavone took the first set 6-4. As the rain poured, game play was stopped, and on commencement of the match, a different Kvitova emerged, much to the dismay of Schiavone. The following two sets saw glimpses of the Czech’s technical brilliance, and the crowd watched in awe as determined, she regained fearlessness, taking the match 7-5, 6-1 and a place in the quarter-finals.
Despite a courageous come-back in the fourth round, Kvitova was unable to compete with the sheer force of Serena Williams, who in straight sets demolished the Czech. Williams’ serve was meticulous, her shots overpowering, and she played with an unrelenting desire to win which Kvitova could not contest. Although unable to defend her Wimbledon title, with the US Open fast approaching, perhaps Kvitova will be able to triumph once more.
Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki, and Agnieszka Radwanska have all crashed out of the Eastbourne event, hampering their grass-court preparations, ahead of Wimbledon.
In straight sets in the first round, Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova defeated Kvitova. Makarova is 44 places below the defending Wimbledon champion in the standings, but caused an upset with a 7-5 6-4 success. The Czech ace defeated her Russian opponent in the same tournament, last year, but this time the tables were turned, and Kvitova admits it is not what she had hoped for, ahead of the third Grand Slam of the year. Petra Kvitova has said that her game is in great shape heading into the French Open. The 22-year-old, shot to fame after capturing her first ever Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. The Czech tennis star believes that she is a threat on any surface after racking up six titles last year. In truth Kvitova has had a disappointing year so far but revealed that she is in confident mood as the second Major of the year approaches: “I think from last year that I can play on all surfaces and I won in Madrid on the clay, Wimbledon and I won on hard court as well, so I think that I have a game to play very well on different surfaces,”
The world number four believes that Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova will pose the biggest threat in Paris. Kvitova lost to Sharapova in the semi-final of the Australian Open, but beat current women’s number one; Azarenka in last year’s Wimbledon semi-final. Securing a victory at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, would really establish Kvitova’s form coming into the highly anticipated Wimbledon tournament. With the Female competition so open this year with all big players firing, The French open should be another cracker, as the heavyweights of women’s tennis look to outdo each other once again.
Kvitova needs to perform well in Paris and put her recent poor form behind her and gain some confidence going into her summer schedule. Should she fail to make waves and recapture her consistency of last year, her Wimbledon defence may not be very effective if she remains horribly out of form.
